Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights

It’s an overcast day here…which totally puts me in the mood for novels like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights because it just doesn’t get much better than misty moors and mysterious secrets when it’s cloudy outside.

I remember laying with my feet hooked over the back of my grandmother’s couch one summer evening, feverishly reading Jane Eyre, thinking I had found the best treasure yet. It was The Secret Garden all grown up, and I couldn’t get enough. I loved the writing, the characters, and the pathos. When I read Wuthering Heights, I became obsessed with the Bronte sisters. If someone could write something that insanely twisted and darkly romantic, write beautiful poetry, and grapple with deep theology, I had to know more.

When I visited their home several years ago, I was struck by the desolation of the moors, the bitter winds, and the sad history of sickness and death in their village. That bleak landscape, coupled with their strange family history, made me realize it’s no wonder they wrote from such a tortured place! If you love British classics, these are must-reads.
