Emma Book Giveaway!

In honor of the new Emma film currently in theaters, I’m giving away this beautiful Penguin Clothbound Classics edition of Emma by Jane Austen! [Giveaway now closed.]

Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think? I’m hoping to see it this weekend. I’m so curious to see this new version! I’ve read and heard a lot of interesting reviews about it. Some of the casting looks great (Miranda Hart as Miss Bates and Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse). The fashion/costuming is supposed to be incredible.

I’ve heard this one is a bit of a romp, so of course I’m excited to see for myself! I’ll be sure to post a review as soon as I see it!

To get us all in an Emma kind of place, here are a few of my favorite quotes.

Emma Quotes:

“Vanity working on a weak head produces every sort of mischief.”

― Jane Austen, Emma

“If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”

― Jane Austen, Emma

“It was a delightful visit;-perfect, in being much too short.”

― Jane Austen, Emma

“A woman is not to marry a man merely because she is asked, or because he is attached to her, and can write a tolerable letter.”

― Jane Austen, Emma

“I don’t approve of surprises. The pleasure is never enhanced and the inconvenience is considerable.”

― Jane Austen, Emma

Hi, Rachel. I am planning to see the film. Think it sounds fun, though some aspects of it I won’t care for as I like staying true to the novel as much as possible. Thank you for the give-away. Emma may be my favorite J.A., though Anne my favorite heroine.

We are kindred spirits for sure. I think Emma is my favorite JA as well. And Anne will always be my favorite heroine! I really hope this version stays close to the book, though I’m sure it will take a few liberties.

3.5 stars. I won’t say more until you’ve seen it, other than that this is to the 2009 Emma what the 2005 Pride and Prejudice is to the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. It is reimagined and condensed. However, I loooove the music, and the costumes were so fun! A lot of quirky fabric and style anachronisms and they show the total flexibility of designer Alexandra Byrne, who went with such a reserved and soft color palette route with the 1995 Persuasion.

Also, Robert Martin gets his own theme song, which is awesome! Listen for it whenever they’re at his property! 😍

I haven’t seen it yet, as our town’s movie theatre just closed last week. 🙁 I’m hoping to see it, but it may not be until it comes out DVD or on Netflix. I’m very picky about the adaptations of her novels. My favorite is the 5-hr P&P version by A&E with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The closest Emma adaption, IMHO, is the one with Kate Beckinsale as Emma. But Jane Austen is my favorite author (I even blogged about how she has influenced my writing at https://www.liladiller.com/blog/comparing-jane-austen-to-lila-dillers-love-is-series).

Thank you for sharing. Your writing looks intriguing! I am picky as well. This one might not be for the purist, but I still love seeing the different versions to see how they are done. The costuming alone looks quite beautiful!

Oh I am so ambivalent about seeing the movie. I love the book so much and am
reluctant to see it in case it strays, and possibly even parodies the theme of the book. Will probably see it though, the trailer does look tempting. I hope for the best!
